Alan Henry Shute passed away in Fredericksburg, Virginia on November 27, 2022. Al was born on February 6, 1932 in Louisville, Kentucky, the second son of Barbara Newman (Winchester) Shute and Col. Benjamin Smith Shute, and the brother of Lt. David Winchester Shute. The Shute family was originally from Gloucester, Massachusetts, and traveled with Col. Shute's posts in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Al was an Alpha Sigma Phi and a swimmer at The American University. He graduated and married Maxine Elizabeth Benhoff in 1954. Al and Maxine lived in Springfield, Virginia, where they raised their three daughters. He worked for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency for most of his career.
Al loved his dogs, especially the basset hounds and boxers. He studied American history and family genealogy, and enjoyed reading books of all kinds. He was also a dedicated supporter of the American Red Cross Blood Services programs. Over the years, Al and Maxine enjoyed many friends and neighbors, and attended countless youth sports, concerts, church and school events, in support of their children and grandchildren.
Al Shute is survived by his wife, Maxine, and his daughters Bonnie Shute and Robin (Steve) Judy. His daughter Terry (Dave) Potter tragically passed away in 2019. Al and Maxine have been proud and devoted grandparents to their ten grandchildren: Rachel (Drew) Bender, Claire Reifsnyder (Pete O'Malley), Alan van den Arend (Sam Rodgers), Megan (Aaron) Johnson, Benjamin Shute, Lauren Potter, Nicholas Judy, Carey (Nathan) Swigart, Michael Shute, and Elizabeth Shute. They have a growing number of great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service for Alan will be held on January 14, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Tabernacle United Methodist Church. ( 7310 Old Plank Rd, Fredericksburg, VA 22407). Contributions in Alan Shute's memory may be directed to K9s for Warriors or Wreaths Across America .
