Obituary

Albert H. Manhard, fondly known as Bert to his family, and Al to friends, born June 12, 1930, passed away Tuesday, Jan 31, 2006 at Culpepper Memorial Hospital.
Albert Manhard graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953 and continued on to Flight Training and earned his Naval Aviator Wings in 1955. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School at Monterey, California where in 1962 he obtained a Masters Degree in Meteorology.
In 1979, Colonel Manhard retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after 27 years of service to his country. His decorations included the Bronze Star, Ten Air Medals, the Presidential Unit Citation, two National Defense Service Medals, the Vietnamese Service Medal with nine stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry Cross Color with Palm and Frame.
After retirement from the military, Albert flew as a commercial pilot for 8 years. He retired in 1987 to Lake of the Woods where he enjoyed his time with friends and family. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He was the elder of two sons born to the late Albert H. and Helen E. Manhard. His late brother John F. Manhard is survived by his wife Margaret.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Lorraine J. Manhard, his daughter and her husband, Kathleen and Michael Poor of Locust Grove, VA, his three sons and their wives, Gregory and Patricia Manhard of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Patrick and Tammy Manhard of Apex, NC and Christopher and Carol Manhard of Johnson City, TN; his 13 grandchildren, Sarah, Jessica, Whitney, Mark, Rachael, Taylor, Mary Kate, Allison, Jonathan, Laura, Christian, Gregory and Robyn.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 11:30 AM, Saturday, February 6, 2006, at St. Patricks Roman Catholic Church, Spotsylvania, VA. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 -9:00 PM at Laurel Hill Funeral Home, Spotsylvania.
