Alfred Meehan King passed away on May 18th, surrounded by family at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. He was born on October 31, 1933, in Boston, the son of Dr. Lester King, MD, a pathologist and historian of medicine, and Marjorie Meehan King, MD, a psychiatrist who was one of the first women to graduate from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
He grew up in Chicago. One of his great joys was seeing his beloved Cubs win the 2016 World Series. He graduated from The Francis Parker School at age 16, earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard College, and then returned home where he met and married Barbara Schedel of Bloomington, IL. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, worked for a series of manufacturing firms, and then found his professional calling when he joined American Appraisal Associates in Milwaukee. Honing the craft of valuing illiquid assets, liabilities, and equity held his attention for the next half-century. He authored six books, was active in professional organizations, and gladly engaged in extended technical discussions with fellow appraisers.
Barbara preceded him in death in 1973. In 1976, he married Mary Jane Oliver King. They lived in Racine, WI, New York City, Saddle River, NJ, and then Spotsylvania, VA, where they have been active members of the community since 1997.
To describe Alfred's pursuits as eclectic would be an understatement. His interests included, but were not limited to, literature, politics, history, Bible studies, sushi, opera, travel, cooking, luxury cars, and antique glass paperweights. He stood ready to offer professional, emotional, or financial help to those in need.
He is survived by his wife Mary Jane, son Tom (Yvonne) King, daughters Katherine (John) LeFebre and Tina Oliver, grandchildren Amanda (Carl) Duncan, Alex King, Emily King, John James LeFebre, Justin LeFebre, Karoline (Bjorn) Rheborg, and Joseph (Kaitlin) LeFebre, and great-grandchildren Henry Duncan, Elin Rheborg, Oliver Rheborg, and Marion Rose LeFebre. His sister Frances preceded him in death in 2013.
Funeral services are limited to immediate family. Those who wish to express sympathy are asked to consider making a charitable contribution in Alfred's name to the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass in Neenah, WI.
