IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Antonio Monterozzo
Lopez
June 13, 1958 – November 20, 2020
Antonio Monterrozo Lopez was born on June 13 th , 1958 in Pueblo Nuevo Viñas of Santa Rosa, Guatemala. He passed away at Mary Washington Hospital at the age of 62 on November 20 th , 2020 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Antonio (or Tony, as most of his friends and family called him) grew up extremely poor financially, but very wealthy in terms of love, character, and perspective. He was never ashamed of his background, in fact, quite the opposite. He told stories of large family gatherings, cutting sugar cane and coffee beans on his grandmother's land, and his short-lived formal education due to family and financial needs. He was proud of his background, childhood, family, and culture.
Despite his love for Guatemala, he knew the United States would offer him greater opportunities. When he immigrated to the United States, he worked multiple jobs and lived modestly to send resources to his siblings. In 1986, he met the love of his life, Maria (Mary). His love for her and their two children, Leslie and Roberto (Bobby), was unwavering. The family eventually moved from San Francisco, California to Stafford, Virginia. Tony embraced the change whole-heartedly. He loved the terrain, open air, and rural feel at the time. He eventually convinced his family to purchase their first home – a huge accomplishment for him as it represented a piece of the American dream in which he genuinely believed.
In 2014, Tony became a grandfather. This was a monumental occasion for him; one that filled him with incredible joy and pride. He took pictures and videos of his granddaughters, Kenley and Samantha (Sammie), every opportunity he had. They felt his love, compassion, and silliness every day.
Tony thoroughly enjoyed travel, dogs, the outdoors, cooking, gardening, music, and amusement parks. He would include his wife, children, and extended family in these activities as much as possible. He wanted everyone to experience his joy and would share his cooking and gardening skills with anyone who would listen. Tony and Mary would frequent concerts, King's Dominion (a local amusement park), and museums. He thoroughly enjoyed this time with her. He loved, defended, and took care of her no matter the circumstances. Even when he learned of his illness, his main concern was Mary's well-being. Tony fought hard, not for himself, but for his wife and family. He was this way before and after his terminal diagnosis of glioblastoma and this is how he will be remembered.
Tony is survived by his wife – Mary, children – Leslie and Bobby, son-in-law – Timothy, granddaughters – Kenley and Samantha, mother – Felipa, siblings – Sara, Maria, Mirtha, Victor, Miriam, and nieces and nephews – notably Abel whom he considered a son. He will be forever missed.
Considering current times, the family will hold a private viewing and service. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes your donation to the American Cancer Society or the Lisa Pitts Eley Cancer Foundation.
