IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carl Robinson
Cornwell
January 19, 1934 – January 25, 2026
Memorial Service
Carl Robinson Cornwell, 92, of Locust Grove, Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026.
Carl was born on January 19, 1934, in Remington, Virginia, and for his entire life he called the Washington, D.C. area home. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a loyal brother, and a kind, steady friend and neighbor.
After a brief time in the U.S. Army—where he served as a vehicle dispatcher and maintenance supervisor in Germany—Carl spent most of his working life in and around the automotive industry. He served as a plant manager, oversaw a fleet of delivery trucks, and eventually opened his own automotive repair shop. There, he quickly earned a reputation as a fair and honest man, worthy of everyone's trust and business.
As a husband and father, Carl was known as a deeply dedicated family man. Whether working side by side with his wife, Shirley, to provide a stable and safe home for their children, building an apartment for his widowed mother-in-law, donating a kidney to give his son a new lease on life, or caring for his daughter's beloved dog while she began a new chapter of her life in Brazil—and through countless other acts both large and small—he was always there for his family.
In his daily life, Carl lived as a quiet example of what it means to act with integrity, humility, and strength. He showed those around him, every day, how to live with kindness, steadiness, and grace.
In retirement, Carl enjoyed an active life with Shirley, his beloved wife of 67 years and his childhood sweetheart from the age of twelve. He especially enjoyed playing golf and participating in Civil War history study groups. Perhaps his greatest joy during these years was being a doting great-grandfather to his beautiful great-granddaughter, Morgan.
Carl was a devoted Christian and an active member of Lake of the Woods Church from the time he and Shirley moved into the neighborhood in 1994.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, and is survived by his daughter Brenda; his son David and daughter-in-law Barbara; granddaughter Bianca and her husband David; great-granddaughter Morgan; sister Helen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21, at 11:00 a.m. at
Lake of the Woods Church
1 Church Lane
