Obituary

Casimir Edgar Norbert "Ed" Scoon (1932-2017) passed away in his sleep May 29, 2017.A celebration of life service will be Saturday, June 3 at 2:00 p.m. Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 10127 Plank Road, Spotsylvania, VA. 22553 with interment to follow.

Ed Scoon was married 43 years to his beloved wife, Thelma Eunice Megginson of Blackstone, Virginia. Amazingly, they both passed on Memorial Day 16 years apart. In addition, Edgar and Thelma were born on the same day! (however, not the same year, but Thelma was loathe to admit she was one year older.)

He is survived by children Malcolm (Lois) Upper Marlboro MD, Cecile (Alvin Peters) Panama City FL, Lydia Fredericksburg VA, and Valerie (Keith Bowers) Tallahassee F, four grandchildren (Casimir, Sahara, Marley, and Wynton) and by his brother George Scoon, Netherlands. His wife Thelma, two grandchildren Mariah and Cierra and one son in law, Novel Rogers predeceased him. He was subsequently married to Doris Canon and they later divorced.

Ed Scoon was born on the Caribbean island of Grenada. He attended college at Hampton Institute , VA where he received his BA and later received a law degree from Howard University. This led him to a long and successful career as an international labor relations officer for the US Federal Government. He travelled to India and to every country in Africa including South Africa during apartheid to improve labor conditions for working people. In 1971, he took a 4 year leave to move to Antigua, (with Thelma and their four children) to serve as the Peace Corps Director of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean.

Ed Scoon loved to play tennis and had a mean backspin. He enjoyed golf and would take his annual golf trip with his buddies. Ed loved living, good company, good food, and a quality rum punch made with hand-squeezed juices and fresh bitters. He celebrated beautiful scenery wherever he found it. He never knew a stranger. And those strangers often became friends when his hearty laugh would ring out infectiously. His joie de vivre was an inspiration. We are comforted in knowing that absence from the body is presence with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8).
