Clinton Jones, Jr. 85, of Locust Grove, VA passed away at his home, Wednesday January 16, 2019, with his loving family at his bedside. Clinton was born on April 12, 1933 to John Thomas Clinton and Maudell (Lancaster) Jones in Alabama.
He joined the US Air Force in 1952. While stationed at Samson AFB in NY, he met his future wife Shirley Elizabeth Cole, at a USO dance in Rochester. They were married on December 27, 1953 in Brighton, NY. Clint's Air Force career was remarkable and adventurous. Having enlisted in the Air Police, over the course of his 20-year career, he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant, working for the Inspector General of the Air Force at the Pentagon. He received several honors for outstanding service. Clint and Shirley lived in unusual and exotic places such as Morocco, Copenhagen, Denmark, and Washington, DC.
After they were married, Clint was stationed in Morocco. His beautiful new bride Shirley soon followed, embarking on the adventure of a lifetime. She travelled by cargo ship to Casablanca. After about a year, they returned to the states. During this time, their son Douglas was born in Mobile and their first daughter, Shonna was born in Charleston, SC.
In 1960 the new family moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, where Clint was attached to the U.S. Embassy. One of Clint's responsibilities was to investigate potential candidates for flight training,in order to reject candidates whose sole purpose was to obtain flight training in order to work for Danish Airlines. The Jones family spent 4 wonderful years living in Copenhagen. Shonna and Douglas attended an American school and the embassy hosted many events for the American community, including national holidays and church services. The family made somewhat of a tradition of attending church followed by having dinner at a Chinese restaurant. Sharon Lorraine, their second daughter was born in Rochester, NY after the family moved back to the states in 1964. Clint enjoyed travelling with Shirley, reading, playing softball and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Shirley; son Douglas; two daughters Shonna E Call (Christopher), Sharon L. Aderholdt (Jonathan); two grandchildren, Garrett P. Aderholdt, Grace E. Aderholdt; and sister Dottie Ann Hall. Clinton was preceded in death by his brother, Hester Clinton Jones and two sisters, Katherine Sparks and Betty Jean Butt.
