Cynthia R. Murdock, 76, of Locust Grove, VA, died Wednesday, February 1, 2023, of cancer at her home in Lake of the Woods. She was born in Neptune, NJ, on August 23, 1946, to Dr. Donald G. and Lena B. Reynolds. The family resided in Freehold, NJ where her father was a well-known physician and surgeon.
Cynthia graduated from Freehold Regional High School in 1964 where she was a majorette. She attended Hillsdale College in Michigan and was a proud member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She graduated in 1968 with a BA in English.
In June 1969, she married her high school sweet heart, Terry L. Murdock, shortly after his return from serving in the Army in Vietnam. They quickly relocated to Florida while Terry attended flight school.
The couple moved back to New Jersey in 1970 where Cyndie taught 7th grade Language Arts for three years in Freehold Township. In 1977, the couple moved to Herndon, VA, near Dulles Airport, where Terry flew as a corporate pilot. From 1983 to 1995 she worked for the Geologic Names Unit of the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, VA. From 1996 to 2007 she worked for the Museum Management Program of the National Park Service in Washington, DC.
After 30 years in Herndon, where she raised three children, they moved two hours south to retire in the Lake of the Woods community. Restless in her retirement, Cyndie went on to work another 5 years as a contractor for the National Park Service, making the long commute back and forth to DC each work day.
Cyndie loved spending time with her family and cherished her friends and neighbors. She was a voracious reader and an avid genealogist, tracing her family roots across two continents as far back as the 1600's. She also volunteered her time transcribing old handwritten census information into a searchable digital format for the benefit of others tracking down their own family history. Her beloved dog Lucy was a constant companion during the last several years of her life and helped comfort her after her husband's passing in 2021.
She is survived by her children Wm. Todd (Jennifer) Murdock, Alicia (Brian) Shifflett, and Darren Murdock; six grandchildren, Jade E. Shelton, Caroline and Collin Murdock, Blake, Tucker and Cooper Shifflett. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, her parents, and her sister Barbara Miller.
