David Kovarik, husband to Karen Kovarik, father of William J., Daniel E., and Kenneth D. Kovarik, resident of Lake of the Woods, Virginia, is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Georgie Day Eley Kovarik, in 2006. He was born Dec. 26, 1928 at Ft. Benning Georgia and died Aug. 15, 2017 in Fredericksburg, Va.
David Kovarik studied civil engineering at Virginia Military Institute and graduated in the class of 1950. He served in the US Army during the Korean War in 1951 in the Corps of Engineers, and later joined the Army's Transportation Corps. He also served in Vietnam in 1963 and again in 1968. His decorations include Bronze Star with "V" device, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, and Parachute Badge. In addition, he served at several duty stations in the U.S. and at overseas posts in Venezuela and Italy.
He retired from the Army in 1977 and began a second career with the Virginia Dept. of Highways. He was a pilot, an eagle scout and a licensed professional engineer. He designed and built his house at Lake of the Woods in 1980 and retired there in 1993. He also served on the Orange County Planning Commission for 12 years. His family and friends are deeply grateful for a life so well lived.
