David Garth Viar, Sr. passed away Sunday Dec. 30, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family.
Garth was born Sept. 6, 1928 in Alexandria to William C. and Rowena (Wood) Viar.
He married Sylvia Lloyd on Jan. 4, 1946 at Rockville, Md.
He was well known in the horse show circuit in Northern Virginia in the late 40's. He went on to win the Virginia Governor's Cup for High Jumpers with his horse "HiJack".
He was later self employed as a Trade Show Manager.
He is survived by his wife Sylvia, 4 sons: David G. Jr. & wife Karen, Centreville; William C. II, Dale City; Stephen D. & wife Michele, Chantilly; Philip A. & wife Louise, Dale City, 4 daughters: Kathleen & husband Robert Williams, Locust Grove; Christine & husband Dennis Lambert, Burke; Patricia & husband Elbert Smith, Locust Grove; Sandra & husband Brent Steighner, Midlothian, sister Mae Coates Ellis, 26 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Claude M. Viar.
Family will receive friends at Laurel Hill Funeral Home beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 with funeral services starting at 1 p.m. Interment will be Friday, Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. at Mt.
