Douglas Penn Crain, 84, of Locust Grove, VA, passed away August 18, 2014 at Mary Washington Hospital with family by his side.

Funeral service will be held at Laurel Hill Funeral Home located at 10127 Plank Road, Spotsylvania VA 22553 on August 31, 2014 at 3:00 pm with a reception to immediately follow at the Clearwater Grill in Locust Grove VA from 4:00-6:00 pm

Douglas was born in Vernon, TX to Ira George (Cage) and Gilmer Crain on January 19, 1930. He graduated from Odell High School and later earned a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from Texas Tech and a Master's of Business Administration from Texas Christian University. He proudly served in the United States Army stationed in Germany during the Korean War, where he met the love of his life Christa Maria Fey. He worked in the aerospace industry with McDonnell Douglas and Vought Corporation, retiring in 1992 while living in Vienna, VA. During his time in the industry he was an integral part of the Apollo, Shuttle and Stealth programs among many others.

He was a resident of the Lake of the Woods community and enjoyed participation and leadership on many committees as well as tireless work with land planning issues in Orange County. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved spending time with his great friends in North Dakota. Locally, his leadership, mentoring and kindness will be greatly missed by his many friends, family and his favorite Labrador retriever, Heidi.

Douglas is preceded in death by his parents; Cage and Gilmer; and a daughter Marianne Gardener.

Douglas is survived by his wife of 59 years, Christa Maria of Locust Grove, VA; son and daughter in-law Mark Douglas and Angela Marie; daughter Peggy Heath; two grandchildren Lisa and Jeffrey Heath as well as great grandchildren.
