Granvil "Jack" Hawkins, 85, of Orange County, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 03, 2016. Jack was born in Dickenson County, Virginia. He was drafted into the US Army on February 9, 1950, fought bravely and was wounded in the Korean War, and received an honorable discharge on July 12, 1957. He worked for the federal government at US Army Base Fort Belvoir and retired as a Research, Development, and Engineering Equipment Inspector.
Jack and the love of his life and best friend, Norma, celebrated 56 wonderful years of marriage. He was a strong, quiet man who loved his family dearly, had a great sense of humor, and loved to see others smile. He read his Bible daily, put his faith in God and was a wonderful example of how to be a good person. He was incredibly responsible and hard working, always going above and beyond for his family and those he cared for, always putting others before himself and quick to help anyone in need, even a stranger. He was accomplished at many things, including mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, architecture, and farming. Of all the things he enjoyed, at the top of his list would be the long drives he and Norma would take touring Virginia's familiar by-ways, exploring on or around the mountains, or finding an unfamiliar road and just seeing where it would take them. He also loved to sing and taught himself the fiddle, guitar and banjo which created many happy family memories. Jack also had a deep love of nature, and of the many things he taught and instilled into his children, his awe and respect for this earth was one of the greatest. He was a truly wonderful man and words cannot express how much he was loved and how much he will be missed. Jack's loving family included his wife Norma, his two daughters, Gail and Becky, his son-in-law Fred, and his five grandchildren, Adam, Ryan, Locke, Kevin, and Kelly.
Graveside services were private at Laurel Hill Memorial Park.
