James Thomas Monroe, 93 of Spotsylvania passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Hughes Nursing Home, Fredericksburg. J.T. Or Tommy as he was often called, was born in Stafford County on March 27, 1924 to A.D. Sr. and Eliza Eley Monroe. He joined the Marines at an early age and fought in WW II. Over the years, he often made reference to the attack on Pearly Harbor. He was awarded the Purple Heart. J.T. married the love of his life, Evelyn Carter Brown. He was an excavating contractor for many years and a long time member of Goshen Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Monroe was predeceased by his wife Evelyn C. Monroe, his son, Larry T. Monroe, his grandson, Thomas (affectionately referred to as "Chiggar") and his brother Admiral Dewey Monroe, Jr. J.T. is survived by his stepson E. Gerald "G" Brown, his nieces Susan M. Shackelford (Ray), Janet M. Ott and nephew Joseph Monroe (Lisa). Graveside services will be held at Goshen Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations my be made to Goshen Baptist Church 9800 Gordon Road, Spotsylvania, VA 22553, in his memory.
