James Elwood Reid Jr passed away in the arms of close family members at his home in Locust Grove, VA on August 20, 2021 at the age of 78.
Born in Washington, D.C., James, also known as Jim/Jimmy, led his life as a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather with honesty, dignity, and loyalty.
Aside from his family, his greatest devotion was to the U.S. Army. As part of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, his posts in Germany, Vietnam, Iran, and throughout the United States led him to discover his passion for the study of human behavior and race relations. His education resulted in future positions supporting Equal Employment Opportunity efforts, helping to bridge the gap among service members to ensure honor and dignity regardless of race or background. After serving for over 23 years, he ultimately retired as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Army, he spent 12 years as a Regional Manager with the Washington Post.
Despite dealing with debilitating health issues for the last 31 years of his life, he never lost his spark or sense of humor. He never complained or took anything for granted, he enjoyed living and appreciated even the smallest things. He was a true gentleman and a thoughtful, caring person who was admired and respected by all who knew him. His calming presence, infectious smile, crooked walk, authenticity, and compassionate spirit is deeply missed.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James and Rosalie Reid, and sisters Emily Mitchell and Linda. He is survived by his wife Solveigh, children Yasmin Williams, Teena (David) Karp, James (Wendy) Reid III, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; sister Viola, brothers; Lloyd "Dennis" (Sheila) Reid, Charles Reid, Lynwood "David" (Carol) Reid, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. Please arrive at the chapel by 10:30 AM.
