Jerry Ashby Trice, M.D., 77, of Fredericksburg, died Monday January 10, 2011 at his residence. He was born on October 10, 1933 in Washington D.C., the son of the late Faye Sprinkle Trice and George Washington Trice.
Dr. Trice graduated with scholastic honors from the Virginia Military Institute in 1955 and then received his degree in medicine from the Medical College of Virginia where he also did an internship. While at MCV he won the Bryan Award in Pathology and upon graduation, was inducted into the Medical Honor Fraternity, Alpha Omega Alpha.
Fulfilling his military obligation, he served in the Army Medical Corps at the 121st EVAC hospital in Korea and finished his enlistment at Ft. Lee, Virginia. Dr. Trice then completed a residency in Internal Medicine followed by a Pulmonary Fellowship at Baylor College of Medical/Veterans Hospitals in Houston, Texas.
Remembering his Virginia roots, he came to Fredericksburg in 1968 joining the Pratt Clinic where he was the area's first pulmonologist. He practiced up till 1990 when he and his colleagues formed the Pulmonary Associates of Fredericksburg. He feigned retirement in 2006.
Dr. Trice was past president of the Mary Washington Hospital Staff, the Fredericksburg Medical Society and also served on the Hospital Board of Directors from 1974 to 1980. He was a member of the Medical Society of Virginia, the Virginia Thoracic Society and the American Lung Association. He also served as a consultant in lung diseases for the Moss Clinic.
He was a serious student of WWII history and up until health issues arose, an avid golfer.
Dr. Trice is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mildred "Tudy" Trice of Fredericksburg, his son, Jerry Ashby Trice II of Annapolis, MD, his stepdaughter Sharon Minniear and her husband Ed of Fredericksburg, his stepson, Roger McAughan and his wife Colleen of Jacksonville, FL, his granddaughters, Dr. Catherine Minniear and Laura Minniear Light and her husband Rob, all of Fredericksburg and also his grandson Ted Minniear of Fredericksburg.
The family will receive friends Saturday January 15, 2011 at Laurel Hill Funeral Home, Spotsylvania from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Services and Inurnment will be private.
