Joan Embrey, lovingly known as Momma, Mawmaw and Mama passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at age 90 surrounded by the love of her family.

Born Joan Thurston, on August 12, 1935. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Clyde Embrey, on September 6, 1954. Together they built a life rooted in devotion, strength, and family. Clyde preceded her in death on March 14, 2017, and Joan carried his love with her always.

Joan was the heart of her family. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and the generations that followed. Her home was a place of warmth, comfort, and unconditional love. She resided in Woodbridge, Virginia for most of her life, where she raised her family and created memories that will be treasured forever.

She was preceded in death by her children Patsy Embrey and Terry Ratliff, and Terry's husband, Danny Ratliff.

Joan is survived by her children Donald "Donnie" Embrey (Debra) and William Embrey; along with 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were the pride and joy of her life.

Joan will be remembered for her loving heart, gentle strength, and unwavering devotion to her family. Though she will be deeply missed, her love, wisdom, and legacy will live on through the many generations to go on.

Graveside services will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 9:45 a.m.
