Beloved wife, mom, friend, and grandma, Joann Agnew Wyant, 73, of Fredericksburg, Virginia peacefully passed away on December 20th, 2025 with her sons by her side.
Joann was born on April 6th, 1952 in Arlington, VA, to two loving parents: Forrest and Libby Agnew. She spent her childhood with her two older siblings, Martha Christie and Scott Agnew, and lifelong friends, Rosemary Guida and Betty Pawlik. She graduated from Yorktown High School in 1970 and attended James Madison University earning her degree in Education in 1974.
Joann met her husband, Steven Wyant, on the bus ramp of Salem Elementary School and they married in 1990. Their first son, Scott, was born in 1991 followed by their second son, Travis, in 1993. Following Steve's passing in 1999 from cancer, Joann raised her two boys on her own, while working full time as a teacher.
Joann worked predominantly in the Spotsylvania school system at Salem Elementary. Joann took pride in the amount of students she was able to make lasting impacts on. She retired from Spotsylvania County in 2008, but continued to teach as an after school tutor and then as an elementary educator at South Stafford Christian School. She retired from teaching in 2016 with over 40 years of experience. Joann treated all her students as if they were her own children — she treated them with kindness and love.
Joann was a member of Chancellor Baptist church for over two decades. She actively volunteered within the nursery program and for the youth group. She would fondly tell many stories of game nights, Sunday lunches, and mischief her boys would get in around the church. The relationships she and her family built at CBC positively shaped the last chapters of her book.
Joann was a grandma to all who walked through her door. She loved making cookies, peppermint candies, and giving presents to every one she could. She did not hesitate to try new hobbies, picking up activities such as knitting, felting, and most recently, stained glass – all her loved ones received a piece of her art. She loved the Christmas season, often keeping out her collection of Santas all year long.
Joann was an avid fan of Ole Miss Baseball and Football as well as Keene State Field Hockey and Lacrosse. She loved trying to find her boys on the TV with Scott carrying a camera for Ole Miss and Travis carrying a clip board for Keene State. Nothing brought her more pride than seeing her sons succeed in their passions.
Joann was predeceased by her husband, Steven, her parents, Forrest and Libby, her brother Forrest, and her sister Martha. She is survived by her two sons: Scott of Oxford, MI, along with his wife, Kate, and their daughter, Rivers; and Travis of Keene, NH, along with his partner, Haley; as well as many nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life on August 8th, 2026 at Chancellor Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, VA. The event will be Christmas themed, so remember where you store your favorite Christmas sweater!
