John Daniel "Jack" Norton, Sr., 74 of Locust Grove, VA (Lake of the Woods) went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014 at Mary Washington Hospital.
John was born on April 4, 1940 to William Elmer and Melba Leonora (Montgomery) Norton in Washington, DC. He graduated from Suitland High School and joined the Air National Guard in June 1957, at age 17. At the age of 19 he began working at Blue Plains Waste Water Treatment Plant in Washington, DC. He left his job and enlisted in the US Army on Oct. 10, 1961 joining the 82nd Airborne. John married Barbara Jean Boatwright on June 23, 1962 in Washington, DC. Despite being injured during Airborne Training, he strived to complete his duty with the Army and received an honorable discharge on Oct. 9, 1964. He returned to Washington, DC and went back to work for the District, retiring as a Waste Water Treatment Supervisor after 31 years in 1995. He worked up to three additional jobs at a time to support his family including Rosecroft Raceway, School Bus Driver and Gas Station Attendant. John and Barbara moved to Lake of the Woods in 2002. He was a Lifetime Member of the DAV and a member of the Lake of the Woods Veterans Association.
Survivors include: his wife of 52 years, Barbara; two sons; John Daniel "Dan" Norton, Jr. and David M. (wife Lindee) Norton; two daughters; Sheri L. (husband Bill) Nichols, Deborah R. (husband Shawn) Morgal;
Two brothers: William E. "Billy" Norton, and Charles R. "Chuck" (wife Sherri) Norton; and 13 grandchildren; Zachary, Lindsay, Brooke, Laura, Kelsi, Kyle, Jacob, Christian, Josh, Caden, Ryan, Braylin and Camden; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, sister Gail Combs and brother Kenneth Norton.
Private interment services will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Dec. 30, 2014, and a Memorial Service will be held at the Lake of the Woods Church (Locust Grove) on Jan.10, 2015 at 11am.
