Katherine Ursula "Kathy" (nee Brown) Lanning , wife, mother, and grandmother died on August 21, 2019 after a three-year battle with cancer and its side effects. Kathy was born on April 23, 1948 and grew up in the Bronx, NY. During the 1950s and early 1960s, she attended parochial schools in her Catholic parish of St Nicholas of Tolentine. With loving parents (Kay and Dick Brown), she was the middle of seven children born over twenty years. Being teased by her three older siblings and helping to care for her three younger siblings made Kathy the great wife and mother she would later become.
After he was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy, Kathy married her husband Kenneth V. Lanning in her Bronx parish church on June 10, 1967. They spent their honeymoon in beautiful downtown Indian Head, Maryland where Ken completed Navy training at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal School. After Ken became an FBI agent in 1970, they spent the next 10 years assigned to FBI offices in St. Louis, San Antonio, and Los Angeles. In 1981 Ken was transferred to the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. Kathy and her family lived in Manassas and Nokesville, VA for the rest of his FBI career.
The first priority in her marriage was always her family. During their marriage, the most important job of raising their two children fell primarily to Kathy. She was a stay-at-home mom for much of their marriage, except for the 10 years she also worked outside the home to help pay college tuition bills. Her daughter Melissa, born in Maryland, graduated from the College of William & Mary and her son Rick, born in Texas, graduated from Old Dominion University. Kathy's greatest joy in life was being a wife, mother, and grandmother (Max, Brian, and Kyle) and taking care of her family and home. She is primarily responsible for her children growing up to be the caring and considerate people they are. She did it all extremely well and deserved a Special Achievement Award for her career accomplishments.
In 2000, Ken retired and they moved to Spotsylvania, Virginia where they celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary. They cherished their many years together and hoped and prayed for as many more in retirement as the good Lord would give them. Kathy and Ken, however, received some sad news in September 2016 when Kathy was diagnosed with cancer. She underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments at the University of Virginia Cancer Center. She was extraordinarily brave and non-complaining through it all.
Kathy is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ken, her daughter and son-in-law Melissa and Mike Seina, her grandson Max Seina, her son Rick Lanning and his wife Christi Hetrick, her grandsons Brian and Kyle, her sisters Hilary McKenna and Melissa Hunter, her brothers Charles Brown and Peter Brown, 6 brothers-in-law, 6 sisters-in-law, and 21 nephews and nieces. Her father Richard Brown, her mother Kathryn Brown, her sister June Real, and her brother Richard Brown preceded her in death.
Visitation and a celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2019, 6:00pm – 8:00pm, at Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 10127 Plank Road, Spotsylvania, VA 22553. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 27, 2019, at 1:00 pm, at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, 9151 Ely's Ford Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407. Interment will be private.
