Obituary

Fredericksburg's most popular centenarian, Larry "Curly" Haubner, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at his home at Greenfield's Assisted Living with loved ones and caregivers by his side. Born in 1902 in Iowa, Curly enlisted in the army at age 40 and fought in WWII. In later years, his health always in mind, Larry earned a reputation in Fredericksburg as, "The Singing Bicyclist" from his spirited rides around the city. After an accident in 2004 landed Curly in the hospital, he moved into Greenfield Assisted Living. As a well-loved and well-known resident, Curly continued his health regimen through his final weeks, only ever needing vitamins to sustain his remarkable health In 2007 and 2009, financial difficulties threatened his residency at Greenfields. Curly's POA reached out to the community for help and the response was overwhelming. As a result of Curly's incredible longevity and spirit, people as far away as Australia contributed to his funding and he was able to remain in his home with familiar faces and friends until the end. The remainder of funds raised for Curly will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. Visitation and rosary service will be held at Laurel Hill Funeral Home in Spotsylvania, VA on Monday, December 20, 2010 from 6 - 8 pm. Funeral Mass will be conducted at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg on Tuesday at 11:00 am with interment immediately following at Laurel Hill Memorial Park. On-line condolences can be made at www.laurelhillfuneralhome.com.
