MARY ANN (Thornton) JONES, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died peacefully on September 18, 2019 in Snellville GA at 80 years of age from complications related to kidney disease. Born in Washington D.C in 1939, Mary and her two older sisters were placed in Hillcrest Children's Home in Washington DC in 1945 where they remained until 1949 when her mother re-married and moved the sisters to their family's new home in Falls Church VA. She attended Falls Church High School and met her future husband through Station 18 (Jefferson) of the Fairfax County Volunteer Fire Department when her step-father, a volunteer, brought home another young volunteer, JAMES THOMAS (Tommy) JONES (1937–2017) to meet Mary. By all accounts, the meeting appears to have been successful. She and Tommy married in December 1957 and they remained married for the rest of their lives.
She was employed by Virginia National Bank from 1972 until she retired from what is now Bank of America in 2002. She and Tommy moved to Stafford VA upon her retirement where they remained until his death in 2017. She moved to Tucker GA later that year to be closer to family where she remained until her death.
Mary had a lifelong love of trains and relished any opportunity to ride one although she usually made do with simply watching them as they passed. She also loved the water and treasured her time at the beach, the marina or just the riverside where she spent many hours together with Tommy watching the boats.
She is survived by sons DUANE (Debbie) and JIMMY (Delia), grandchildren MICHAEL (Tanya), JOSEPH (Nicole), LAURA, DYLAN and CERYS JONES, great-grandchildren KEVIN, MASON, CAILYN and CARSON JONES and two sisters, HAZEL CHRISTINE (Thornton) MARCHAM and PATRICIA GAIL THORNTON (
Elizabeth Lynn Eareckson).
She is preceded in death by mother FRANCES (Price) THORNTON SLOPER (1919–1996), father CLARENCE BENJAMIN THORNTON (1912–1957), step-father JOE SLOPER (1915–1976), brother CLARENCE BENJAMIN THORNTON JR. (1932–2002), and sisters BARBARA ELIZABETH (Thornton) PICKERAL (1935–2017), and BETTY FRANCES (Thornton) DODSON (1938–2015).
Relatives and friends are invited to Mary's Life Celebration at Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 10127 Plank Road, Spotsylvania, VA on Friday, September 27th from 10am until time of Graveside service in the Laurel Hill Memorial Park at 11am.
