Gil Meadows, Educator, Businessman Gil Meadows, the WV-born educator/businessman who moved to Fairfax County in 1958, died 8/17/11 after a fall at his Stafford County home last week. He had celebrated his 78th birthday with family and friends on 7/30/11. Gil, who hailed from West Virginia's coal region, left high school for a stint in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Later he attended and graduated from Marshall University prepared to teach. Upon moving to Fairfax County he began an illustrious career in the county school system. During his first year of teaching, he was elevated to a principalship position and served in that capacity at several county schools throughout his career. He worked tirelessly to improve public education in general and especially promoted opportunities for students and teachers alike in Fairfax County. He served a term as president of the Fairfax Education Association. He retired from the school system in 1984 and subsequently concentrated on business interests. Gil was a great sports fan and especially loved and attended Redskins and Nationals games with family and friends. He perceived sporting events as a great American tradition and pastime. Nila, Gil's wife of 56 years, died 9 months ago. They are survived by two sons, Merlin and Stan, and two grandchildren, Amanda Lee and Bradley Merlin. Gil is second oldest of seven closely-knit siblings and the first to pass on. Siblings and their spouses are Berman and Tootsie, Bill (Farmer) and Betty, Fred and Nancy, Nola Mae Turner, Dave and Janice and Vic and Sara. Left to mourn are many, many nieces, nephews and other kin as well as numerous friends and business associates, all of whom loved and respected his wonderful character, charm and wit. Arrangements are being coordinated by Laurel Hill Funeral Home. There will be a viewing for family and friends at Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 10127 Plank Road, Spotsylvania, Va, (10.5 miles west of I-95 on Rt. 3) on Sunday, August 21, 2:00-4:00pm. There will be an additional viewing on Monday at 10:00am at Chancellor Baptist Church, 11324 Gordon Road, Fredericksburg, Va followed by the funeral at 11:00. Interment will be at the Laurel Hills Cemetary. Contributions can be made to Chancellor Baptist Church Music Ministry.
