Obituary

Murl Hampton Adams, one hundred years of age, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, February 11, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Murl was born to Bessie and Martin Adams, on March 19, 1923, in Twin Branch, West Virginia. He married his lifelong sweetheart, Carol Sue Harrison, of Davy, West Virginia, on July 7, 1953. Murl and Carol soon moved to Ridgewood, Queens, New York City, where they raised three children. In 1971, they moved the family to Fairfax County, Virginia, and resided there until they retired in 1994 to Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Murl was a talented man who could accomplish anything he set his mind to doing.  As a craftsman, he most loved working with his hands and building things like decks, sheds, treehouses, as well as gifts like tables and birdhouses for family and friends. Later in life, his creativity came out in his poetry writing which beautifully captured his thoughts and emotions relating to childhood, his wife and faith. Murl was most at home in the outdoors, enjoying lawn work, gardening, hunting, fishing, and relaxing in the sun in his lawn chair. Fortunately, Murl remained healthy and active enough to fish regularly until almost 98 years old, and mowed his lawn and tended to his garden until age one hundred. As a lover of baseball, he was a life-long fan of the New York Mets and always looked forward to the baseball season.

His greatest passion, however, was his family. As a young man, he was always an immense help to his mother, and to his younger siblings. Always a man of his word, Murl was a wonderful, hardworking husband and father, who along with his wife, Carol, set an example of what honest, persevering, and loving parents should be. As a grandfather, he formed an unbreakable bond with his grandchildren. He was playful and their number one fan, always there to offer his love, laughter, support, and encouragement. He was also blessed to have the opportunity to hold three great-grandchildren in his arms.

Murl is survived by his loving wife Carol, three children, Daniel, Deb, and Joanna (and their spouses, Jeanette, Chuck, and John); six grandchildren, Justin, Jacob, Nicole, Jeremy (and their spouses, Christina, Grace, Ben, Karolina), Lauren, Amber; and three great-grandchildren, Danny, Alex, and Lucas. Murl is also survived by his youngest brother Clyde (and his wife Linda), along with numerous nieces and nephews. Murl Hampton Adams was predeceased by his parents, cherished sisters, Ruby, Marie, Shirl, and by brothers, Ralph, Clarence, Frank, Bob, and Bill.

Murl will always be remembered as a high-spirited and fun-loving man who made people laugh and feel at home and loved. He was a man of integrity and great faith, who was grateful for the simple life he lived and his many blessings.  Psalm 91:16 NKJV - "With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation."
