CDR, Nicholas "Nick" Anthony Ferro of Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, VA , passed away at Mary Washington Hospital, Apr. 9, 2014. Nick was born on Jan. 11, 1937 in Utica, NY to the late Anthony James and Laurina (DuBrule) Ferro. He graduated high school in Utica, NY then continued his education at Syracuse University, receiving a BA in Journalism. During this time, Nick was also a member of the US Navy Reserve, entering active service upon graduation. Nick met and married Evelyn Ann Chen on June 20, 1964 in Washington DC. CDR Ferro served in Washington DC, Japan, Taiwan, Cyprus, England, and Viet Nam from 1971 to 1972. He has been awarded several commendation medals, RVN Campaign Medal w/5 stars, The Defense Superior Service Medal, The Meritorious Service Medal, The Navy Expeditionary Medal, and The Navy Commendation Medal. He continued his education during his service receiving a MA from Southern California and American Universities. Upon retirement from the Navy in 1986, Nick worked for the Fulbright Group in Cyprus and Portugal, then joined the State Department in 1991 serving in Athens, Greece, Shanghai, China and Washington DC. Retiring in 2004, Nick and Evelyn moved to Lake of the Woods where they were members of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Nick was also a member of a golf group known as the Goofers.
Survivors include his wife Evelyn; son Marcus A. Ferro (Andrea Kelly); daughter; Laurina A. Ferro (Allan Lloyd); sister Elizabeth R Donahue (Robert) and 5 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Sunday April 13, 2014 from 2 - 5 pm, at Laurel Hill Funeral Home, Spotsylvania. Funeral Mass will be held Monday, April 14 at 11 am, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fredericksburg, VA, with Father John Ziegler officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests donations to the Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org in lieu of flowers.
