It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Oscar M. Laserna on October 15, 2024, at the age of 83. Oscar was surrounded by his loving family when he left us to meet God after sustaining multiple cardiac arrests at Mary Washington Hospital. While our hearts mourn this devastating loss, we take comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering and resting in peace with our angels in heaven.

Oscar was born on May 28, 1941, in Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines. He was a cherished, devoted, loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. In 1971, Oscar met his wife, Rosario "Sarie", in Staten Island, NY where they were medical residents. Shortly after meeting, they fell in love, and the following year they were married. Oscar and Sarie went on to have three children, Ace, Marisol, and Anthony, and raised their family in Fredericksburg, VA. He was later blessed with six grandchildren, Lucas, Grayson, Noah, Griffin, Oscar, Xander (beloved angel in heaven), and Nico.

Oscar graduated with a Medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in 1966. He then became a Pediatric resident at UST Hospital before he emigrated to the United States for his post-doctoral education. Oscar did his rotating internship at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Staten Island where he finished his OB-GYN Residency, rising to Chief Resident in 1968-70 before he became a clinical fellow in 1972. He established his clinical practice at St. Vincent's Medical Center as an attending staff from 1973-1976. Oscar then moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he became a well-recognized OB-GYN physician, surgeon, and consultant in high-risk obstetrics and public health from 1976 until he retired in 2012. Oscar practiced Ob-Gyn at Mary Washington Hospital and also established a thriving private practice with his wife and partner.

Oscar lived a life full of accomplishments and received numerous accolades for his involvement in leadership positions and humanitarian endeavors. He was extremely devoted and passionate about both his family as well as his medical career and his altruistic efforts in the community and less fortunate areas. Oscar was a hard-working, successful, and well-respected OB-GYN physician and surgeon at Mary Washington Hospital and during his annual medical missions in the Philippines. He was an esteemed physician and exemplary pillar of the community, loved by his patients, colleagues, nurses, hospital staff, and anyone who had the pleasure of making his acquaintance. In addition to being a remarkable and distinguished physician, he was extremely amiable, had the kindest heart, and was absolutely selfless; hence the innumerable people who loved and revered him.

As much as he was treasured by everyone at the hospital and the entire community, no one showed more love, admiration, and adoration for him than his three children and six grandchildren. They are so proud to have had such an amazingly devoted and loving father and Lolo (grandfather). Ace, Marisol, and Anthony always loved spending time with him throughout their whole childhood, high school, and college days, and into adult life. Oscar's children thought the absolute world of him and never passed up an opportunity to spend time with him. Even their friends adored "Papa Doc" and always welcomed him with open arms. Whether it was a special event, spending a weekend at one of our colleges, going out to happy hour for oysters and wine, or joining us at a friend's house to eat crabs (dad's favorite!) and just hang out, everyone always enjoyed Papa Doc's company and reveled in his presence, not to mention his unfiltered bluntness which kept everyone laughing. Once Oscar's grandkids came into the picture, the memorable moments increased tenfold and nothing made him happier.

Other than work, Oscar had a passion for tennis. He was an avid tennis player and loved his weekly matches at the country club, followed by drinks at the clubhouse with his friends (and children, once they were old enough). He also relished his involvement with the Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis organizations. Oscar threw the most magnificent Kiwanis Christmas parties, bringing family and friends together during the holidays. He also enjoyed traveling for medical conventions, missions, and after retirement, European cruises with Sarie and their lifelong friends, and especially spending more time with the grandkids. Oscar's vacations consisted of helping others and providing medical care, while also enjoying time with his family and friends. However, most of all, if there was any time to spare away from the hospital or from medical missions, Oscar loved nothing more than to spend time with his family. They were undoubtedly the most important aspects of his life, and his wife, children, and grandchildren knew they were loved above anything else in this world.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Rosario; children: Oscar Horace "Ace", Marisol, and Ray Anthony; grandchildren: Lucas Anthony, Grayson, Noah Ray, Griffin, Oscar Jacob, and Dominico "Nico" Bradley; sister: Petita; and several loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Cirilo and Petra Laserna; siblings: Soledad, Triumpo, Cirilo, Manuel, Efren, and Valeria; and grandson, John Xander.

If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. In our hearts, you hold a place that no one could ever fill. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn't go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God took you home."
