Obituary

Randy Schulz, age 81, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2023, due to a cardiac arrest. His parents were Clarence Schulz and Ruth Anderson Schulz. Born in Illinois on Lincoln's birthday, Randy and the whole state of Illinois celebrated Abe's and Randy's day with a federal holiday. His high school years were spent in Des Plaines, Illinois, where he attended Maine Township High School. At age 17 he went to Jacksonville, Illinois, to attend Illinois College. There he met the love of his life, Joan Pedersen. They were married at age 20 (Randy's Mom had to go to the city hall in Chicago with the couple to get the marriage license since Randy was not yet 21) after their junior year. Graduating in 1963, Randy and Joan were one of four married couples.

Upon graduation, Randy began his 34-year career with various telephone companies. He started with a management training course with Illinois Bell and then on to a management position, living in Peoria, Joliet, and Naperville. In 1976 he was transferred to AT&T in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Then it was on to Washington, DC, to Bellcore to work in National Security/Emergency Preparedness.

Upon retirement from Bell Atlantic (now Verizon) Randy and Joan built their dream home in Fawn Lake, Spotsylvania, Virginia. They designed the home themselves and their architect son Derek drew up the plans. Randy had 25 fantastic years in his lakefront home, playing golf, woodworking (most of the wooden furniture in his home was made by Randy), gardening, and eating out. He gave back to the community by serving on the Fawn Lake Architectural Committee for over a decade and building more than 100 bluebird houses.

Randy leave behind his wife of 60 years, Joan, their two sons, Troy (Karen) of Easton, Pennsylvania, and Derek (Amy) of Marlborough, Massachusetts, granddaughter Katherine, and brother Rickey of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. There will be a memorial service held in the Spring.
