Born: Nov. 6, 1926 in Bellevue, Ohio to parents Dorothy Mead and Sidney Mayer.
Died January 19, 2013 in Arlington, VA, at age 87.
Richard (Dick) was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed politics, philosophy, canoeing, reading and hiking. He was a conscientious objector during WWII and served as a medic in the U.S. Army on Guam. He received a B.S. from Ohio Wesleyan Univ. and was president of both the Inter-Fraternity Council and Phi Delta Theta. He received an M.S. in Surveying/Engineering from Ohio State University. His work included teaching at Texas A&M, his surveying business in Painesville, Ohio and sales and newspaper writing in Schuylerville, NY, where he also volunteered teaching chess to youth.
He is survived by siblings Margery Mayer of Brentwood, TN and Ronald Mayer of San Francisco, CA, his children Richard Mayer, Jr. of California, MD, Tamerah Mayer of St. Paul, MN, Debra Mayer Scheibe of Berkeley Heights, NJ, Sandra Mayer Moffitt of East Falmouth, MA, Susan Mayer Williams of Columbus, OH, 5 grandchildren and his former wife June Caudill Leeman. His brother Robert Mayer of NC predeceased him. He will be missed by all.
