Obituary

Richard Allan Hoffman of Fredericksburg, VA, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2023 at age 73.  Rick was born in Lawrence, MA, on May 24, 1950 to parents Albert and Phyllis and grew up in the neighboring town of Methuen.  Rick enrolled at Purdue University in 1968 where he participated in Army ROTC, the Purdue "All American" Marching Band, and met his wife, Carol Germann.  He received a BSEE from Purdue University and later a Masters in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.

After his time at Purdue, Rick served four years in the US Army as an Electronics Engineer which included working at the US Army Signals Warfare Lab.  In private industry he was a Program Manager at Melpar, E-Systems, and other defense contractors.  He later changed careers, working as a Bid Estimator on audio-visual installations for AVI-SPL, winning multiple "Best Salesman" awards before retiring in 2013.

Beyond work, Rick was a committed volunteer for the Northern Virginia Swimming League and filled numerous roles within the organization before being bestowed the honor of serving as its President from 2003 to 2004.  Prior to this prestigious appointment, Rick served as President of the Greenbriar Pool Club and was actively involved with the Greenbriar Swim Team of Fairfax, VA.  After retirement, Rick's passion to volunteer led him to serve on the Alumni Advisory Board for the Purdue Bands & Orchestra program and on the Purdue Alumni Board for the Sarasota chapter of the Purdue Alumni Association.

Rick was a dedicated father and husband who worked diligently to provide for his family.  A true engineer at heart, he was thoughtful and analytical yet considerate and possessed a surprising sense of humor.  He loved to travel and spent much of his retirement visiting many notable and historic destinations across both the US and Europe.  Nevertheless, he was always most comfortable at home with a cup of coffee and a newspaper or sitting at a computer analyzing spreadsheets.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert, his sister Lois, and his uncle Robert Lord.  He is survived by Carol, his wife of 46 years, his brother Russell, his sons Matthew and Andrew, daughter-in-law Aisha, and granddaughter Sarah.

A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor at Resurrection Lutheran Church on Friday, October 20th, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. followed by luncheon at the church.
