IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Leonard
Penley
September 30, 1957 – April 9, 2024
Robert Leonard "Bob" Penley, 66, of Locust Grove, VA, passed away on April 9, 2024 after a battle with glioblastoma, a stage 4 brain cancer. He was born on September 30, 1957, in Arlington, VA, to Gene and Charlene Penley.
Bob grew up in Pimmit Hills, a suburb of Falls Church, VA, with his three sisters and two younger brothers. His first job was at age 12, when he helped out at his Dad's job site. When he was of legal age, he worked at Child's Exxon in Tysons Corner, VA. He had fond memories of his devoted mother, Charlene, bringing him her "famous" strip steak dinners. The other employees were green with envy! As an adult, he started working in the commercial air balance trade. He eventually became a business owner. In his evenings and weekends, he loved coaching youth sports—baseball, basketball, football, and hockey.
Bob was a loving husband to Susan Lessa Penley and a devoted father to his sons Dan Penley and his wife, Jessica of Centreville, and John Penley and his wife, Audrey, of Mechanicsville. He cherished his grandchildren, Landon, Harper, and Carter. Bob was a beloved brother to Karen O'Connor and her husband, Rory; Susan Brewster; Marty Nadeau; Harold Penley and his wife, Karen; and Bill Penley.
Bob was known for his love of babies, taking on the role of Lake of the Woods dog park president, fishing from his backyard dock, and enjoying a good cigar. He never met a stranger and enjoyed walking his beloved dog, Rufus, while chatting with neighbors.
A service of remembrance will be held on April 16, 2024, at Laurel Hill Home and Memorial Park, 10127 Plank Rd, Spotsylvania, VA 22553. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am, followed by the funeral at 10:00 am, and the gravesite ceremony at 11:00 am.
