Ronald Lee Harrell, 62 of Fredericksburg VA , passed away on Friday 12-19-2014 at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, MD.
Ron was born September 8, 1952 in Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Washington DC to Frederick H. Harrell Sr. and Ruth Marie (Fisher) Harrell. Ron was the middle child of 3 children born to Fred and Ruth. Both parents preceded Ron in death, Fred passed away on July 11, 2002 and Ruth on May 10, 2013.
Ron graduated from Suitland High School in Suitland MD in 1971. The Harrell family grew up in Prince George's County MD. After his parents retired, Ron moved with them to Fredericksburg VA in December 1978.
Ron had a variety of jobs after graduating from high school in 1971 until the family moved to Virginia in 1978. He had worked for Peoples Drug Store, Richmond Brothers Men's Clothing Store and a restaurant, and all of these businesses were located in Iverson Mall in Hillcrest Heights MD. He also worked for Bowl America Silver Hill Bowling Lanes as a janitor in Temple Hills MD. After moving to Virginia, Ron worked for the McDonald's Corporation. He worked in 3 of their locations- the Route 3 East store in front of the Spotsylvania Mall, McDonald's on Garrisonville Rd and the smaller McDonald's location on Route 3 West. Ron stopped working in May 2004.
Ron was a member of the F.O.P. #15 Ladies Auxilary that he joined with Ruth Harrell. He had a variety of interests from being an avid Washington Nationals baseball fan, a lover of all the "oldies" music, which especially included Elvis Pressley and loved watching movies and TV. He was a "collector" of things, from an extensive movie collection, a coin collection, souvenir knives, model cars, lighted Christmas houses, a large collection of music CDs and also home dcor type Collector Plates by Bradford Exchange.
In May 2012, Ron suffered a spinal cord stroke and was transferred to a local nursing home in Fredericksburg VA. In April 2014, he was transferred to a nursing home in MD to be closer to his remaining family members.
Survivors include his sister ,Debra S. Helman of Frederick MD and his brother, Frederick H. Harrell Jr. of Indian Head MD, 2 nieces: Shannon Harrell and Kathleen Fertig and 1 nephew : Robert Helman and 2 great nieces.
Family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2pm on Saturday December 27, 2014 with the funeral services immediately following the viewing with Rev. David Thayer officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Memorial Park, Spotsylvania, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to St. Jude's Hospital for Children in Ron's memory.
