On Monday, March 28th our loving mother Solveigh Catharine Reid passed away peacefully at the age of 80. Her kindness, humor, and wit will be greatly missed.
She was born in Thionville, France, in the midst of the Second World War, to Klaus and Elsbeth Hubner. The family later relocated to Alsbach, Germany where she was raised with her two sisters. Despite the tumultuous world around her at a young age, she saw the beauty in everyday life, often recounting the smell of her favorite flowers and the kindness of those around her. At the age of 24, she married the love of her life, James E. Reid Jr. and began her new life in the United States of America. The couple spent 55 years together and raised daughters Yasmin and Teena, and son James.
She devoted her life to creating a family that was full of traditions, love, commitment, and dedication. In addition to her role as a loving wife, mother, and caregiver, she was an extremely talented artist, chef, and gardener. Her passion and determination came through in all of her pursuits; the art she created was fully developed, deep with meaning and breathtaking results; her beautiful gardens were loved and admired by all; and her amazing meals brought us together time and time again. She loved hard, spoke hard, all done with a great deal of force and substance. Her calming presence, infectious smile, warm hugs, deep laughter, and compassionate spirit is deeply missed.
Solveigh is preceded in death by her husband James E. Reid Jr., parents Klaus and Elsbeth Hubner, and sister Ursula Eick. She is survived by her children Yasmin Williams, Katharina (David) Karp, and James (Wendy) Reid III; grandchildren Christine Baker (Chrissy), Alexander (Angela) Moser, Christina Hall, Reid (Edinita) Moser, Daisy Williams, Delaney Karp; great-grandchildren Jackson Baker, Reid Moser Jr (Keanu), and Aubrey Moser; sister Juliane Paul; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
