Susie A. Ellicott, a technical writer and editor with a lifelong love of learning and historic preservation, died of cancer on June 24 at a hospital near her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was 72.

Susie was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Sally and Paul Voreacos. The family moved to Linthicum, Maryland, after Paul got a job at Westinghouse Electronics Systems. They later moved to Towson, Maryland, and Susie attended the Bryn Mawr School. She studied at Kirkland College for a year before transferring to Case Western Reserve University, where she graduated.

She worked for several decades as a writer and editor for employers in the Washington, D.C. area, including the Society for Human Resource Management, the Dewberry Group and Michael Baker International. Projects she worked on included the Federal Emergency Management Agency's flood insurance program and a Department of Defense study on the prevention, treatment and mitigation of blast injuries.

A voracious reader, Susie enjoyed a wide range of intellectual pursuits, including US and British history, art and literature. Susie loved excursions with her childhood friends, Ellen Ora de Waal-van der Ham and Kat Jamieson, and her cousins, Maud Anderson and Amy Troyansky. More recently, she explored Civil War battlefields with her dear friend Bob Lookabill. She loved to visit historic sites in Virginia, including Mount Vernon and Colonial Williamsburg, where she frequented the art galleries, antique shops, book stores and farmers markets.

Susie was a fabulous cook, whose sauces, casseroles and pies were a joy to all who had the good fortune of tasting them. She had an extensive collection of cookbooks, as well as an impressive array of other books that filled many shelves. She surrounded herself with beautiful artwork, pottery and antiques.

Susie is survived by a brother, David Voreacos and his wife Betsy; their children, Molly, Max and Leo Voreacos; an aunt, Eugenia Roelofs; several cousins; and her loving companion Bob Lookabill. She was previously married to Andrew Ellicott Stevenson and Gerard Savage.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 12, 2025 in Fredericksburg.
