It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mrs. Virginia Carol Rush, 88, on September 24, 2020. Carol resided in Williamsburg, VA, before spending her final months closer to her four children and other family in nearby Culpeper, VA.
Born on March 1, 1932 and raised in Burlington, NC, Carol was blessed with a 65-year marriage to Dr. Orville Findley Rush, Jr. They spent time in the Southeast as well as Long Island, NY, and continued to live much of their lives in North Carolina in Chapel Hill and the Outer Banks. They retired in Williamsburg, VA, where they lived for more than 20 years. Carol retired from nursing with 30+ years of service, including serving as nursing operating room supervisor at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. She and her late husband Findley were parishioners of St. Olaf Catholic Church in Williamsburg and were involved in many church and community activities. Both were advocates for equal rights and strongly believed that that they and their children should act in ways that promote social justice.
Carol enjoyed spending time with her family, reading from a variety of genres, sewing and related crafts, admiring and displaying Findley's intricate woodcarvings, and enjoying a glass of chilled red wine with friends and family. Carol cherished the waterways and other natural beauty that she felt so fortunate to be surrounded by throughout much of her life. She also loved continuously learning about the history connected to the places where she lived, particularly during her retirement years in Virginia.
A loving mother and grandmother, Carol is survived by her daughter, Linda Murray (Mike Lee) and sons Larry Rush, Craig (Vanessa) Rush, and Billy (Heather Kane) Rush; her brother, Gailes (Carol) Stuckey; and her grandchildren, Krystle Rush, Carolyn (Everette) Moomey, Sean Murray, Gigi Rush, Peyton Rush, Justin Lee, Maddie Lee, and Dawn Guthrie. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents Tessie and Bill Stuckey, her sister, Billie Pennington, and brother, Jimmy Stuckey.
Our family wishes to thank the staff of The Verena, in Williamsburg, VA, where Carol and Findley spent their final years together, and the staff and caregivers at The Culpeper, in Culpeper, VA, where, after her husband passed away, Carol spent the last few months of a meaningful and productive life close to family and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service in Locust Grove, VA, with immediate family, and funeral services in Burlington, NC, will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (

), a charity that Carol and Findley donated to for many years.
