William Bruton Ward, 83, of Locust Grove passed away Monday Mar. 18, 2013 at his home in Lake of the Woods, surrounded by his family.
Bill was born on June 30, 1929 to William Closs and Mary Edith Bruton Ward in Whiteville, NC. He graduated from high school in Wilmington, NC. He married Lois Jean Grubb on Dec. 5, 1953, celebrating over 59 years of marriage. He served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Bill was a custom home builder in Northern Virginia for many years. After he and Lois retired in 1995, they moved to Lake of the Woods full-time after having been weekend residents for 8 years. They were some of the original land owners in the development having purchased a lot in 1968. Bill continued using his building skills with the local food bank, the Lions Club and the Lake of the Woods Church and projects for close friends. He also volunteered for over 8 years with the Rescue Squad. Bill was a man that did not want to sit still.
Survivors include: his wife, Lois; 1 son, Thomas and wife Brenda Ward;
1 daughter Linda and husband Kenneth Rankin; 1 daughter-in-law, Candace Ward;
3 brothers: Robert Ward, Johnny Ward and Donald Ward; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. William was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Richard Ward, 1 brother, James Ward and 1 sister, Kay Sathmary.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening, March 21, 2013 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Laurel Hill Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Friday March 22, 2013 at the Lake of the Woods Church at 11 am with Rev. Thomas Schaffer officiating.
